We at Treatstock have received many inquiries about what type of glue is most appropriate for use in kitchen utensils and objects that involve the handling or storage of food. Of course, their concerns are valid as regular glues and adhesives can be toxic and harmful to people's health and wellbeing. The obvious solution is to use a food grade sealant or food safe epoxy as they have been created especially for this purpose.
But then this got us thinking. Is it possible to create a food safe glue by using everyday household items? We decided to experiment by trying to stick two halves of a star powder shaker together using three different products: medical glue, sugar syrup, and candle wax. Let’s find out which substances you should stick to!
Our experiment:
1. Medical Glue (Dermal adhesive)
Medical glue can be found at any drugstore and feels like a regular glue with quite remarkable adhesive features.
2. Sugar Syrup
We added two sugar cubes along with approximately two tablespoons of water in a small pot and boiled until the sugar liquefied (if it caramelizes, you have gone too far). We then let the syrup cool for a little bit and placed one of the halves in it. Then we stuck the other half to it and waited till it cooled and became solid. Looks quite hard!
3. Beeswax and Candle Wax
We used both regular candle wax and natural beeswax for this experiment. We covered both the edges of the stars and the surfaces with the warm substance. The connection is flimsy, not to mention it looks terrible.
Results of Testing
We should point out that this task was quite challenging due to the low adhesion of the edges of the stars. We didn’t set out to use any scientific methods in our research, and we just wanted to see how the shaker worked after gluing the halves together.
- Both kinds of wax turned out to be extremely fragile. Don’t recommend to try it.
- Sugar syrup possesses moderate adhesive properties but breaks quickly. If you have nothing else, it is worth a try.
- Medical Glue turned out to work as good as regular food safe glue and would be our recommendation for a homemade food safe glue.
